Chemical injection is essential in various applications and industries, including oil pipelines, gas processing, water and wastewater treatment, and mining. This system provides chemical dosing to prevent process line failures. The process can operate intermittently or continuously in both upstream and downstream systems. The primary component of chemical injection is a quill, which serves as the interface between the chemical feed line and the process pipeline. Chemical injection quills ensure even dispersion of chemicals into the center of the pipeline, preventing channeling along the pipe wall. The quill disperses the injected chemicals into the process pipeline and regulates them to achieve a chemical reaction. This reaction enables the injection of drag-reducing agents (DRA) into the pipeline flow without disrupting the cleaning or “pigging” process.
Injection quills are retractable, allowing insertion or removal even when the system is under pressure. This feature is particularly beneficial when working with chemicals like ammonia, sodium hypochlorite, and polymers, which are prone to clogging. However, most retractable injection quills are static and require manual operation. Field technicians must physically insert and retract the quill. With injection quills placed every 5 to 6 miles (8 to 10 km), this task is time-consuming, labor-intensive, and costly.
